Digital Marketing for Small Businesses: The Ultimate Guide

Illuminate Your Brand

As a small business owner or employee, we know you have to wear so many hats: human resources, operations, finance, management, marketing, sales… the list goes on and on. In an effort to make your business as successful as possible, we wanted to provide a comprehensive guide to digital marketing for small businesses. If you are looking at this and feeling completely overwhelmed, don’t worry. We got you. Just send us your questions and we will get back to you with the wisdom that owning a marketing agency provides. Happy browsing!

(Not sure why you’re here? Learn about the importance of digital marketing.)

Step 1: Define your brand

Just like any good house, we have to start with the foundation (we have been watching too much HGTV in quarantine). The foundation of digital marketing is your branding! Branding is EVERYTHING (we cannot stress this enough). Having a strong image for your business and carrying that across your different marketing channels will make all the difference in the return from your digital marketing. It is easy to make your own (As someone with very little graphic design experience, I have done that in the past). But our graphic design guru Lexi Hunkler will tell you that it takes a professional’s touch. This is the image that will be representing your brand for a long time to come. Take it from us - the investment is more than worth it. It will guide your brand voice, imagery, and ultimately how customers perceive your business both in-person and online.

Step 2: Choose your strategy

The next step in your digital marketing journey is to choose a combination of the many digital strategies that will have the best result for your business. From social media to search marketing, there are plenty of options that can be customized for your business’s needs. Starting small is better than not starting all. Our advice? Just pick one strategy for now and see how your business does in that space. More is (almost) always better so after getting your toes wet, you can dive into the digital marketing world!

Step 3: Dive in and keep learning!

If you found some strategies you were interested in and thought “Hmmm.. that sounds interesting but I’d love to learn more.” then FEAR NOT! We have detailed many strategies, including how to rock your social media, an introduction into promotional marketing, an understandable explanation of search engine optimization (SEO) and search engine marketing (SEM), and the go-to guide for content marketing. These are not meant to be comprehensive, but should be a starting place for you to get to know more about how digital marketing can help your business.

Step 4: Time to go digital!

As we all know, these are unprecedented times (if I had a better, underused phrase I would’ve used it, but alas). Digital marketing may seem scary, but pivoting to digital is a lifeline for struggling businesses. The upfront investment is intimidating, but with the right team behind you it will pay off. We want to be that team for you. If you are ready to illuminate your brand on this thing we call the internet, let us know. In the meantime, happy reading! If you have any digital marketing or small business topics you want us to cover, shoot us a message. We are always looking for more ways to help you!
